Has your septic tank been acting up, and now you suspect that it is time to have it pumped? If so, it will help to know what you can expect when you have this job done by a professional.

Discuss the Problem

The technician that comes out to your home is not going to get right to work. They are actually going to talk to you about the problem you are having so that they can give their insight. For example, they'll want to know if you are having issues with odors in the drain field, drains that are backing up into your home, or weird sound coming from the drains

Locate the Septic Tank

The next step is to figure out where the septic tank is buried underground. This is done with a little bit of common sense, but it starts by following where the main sewer line is coming out of your home. That line can then be followed outside to determine the approximate location. A probe is then inserted into the ground to try to locate the tank, and an outline of the tank will be made. The technician can now determine the location of the front of the tank where the waste enters it, which will be near where the access port is. The ground will need to be dug up to expose the access port of the septic tank.

This is a job that can be done on your own, and potentially save you some time and money when the technician comes out to pump your tank. Consider doing this prior to their arrival if you feel confident with doing it on your own.

Pump the Tank

A hose will be connected to the truck brought to your home by the septic tank pumping company, which will extend to where your septic tank is located. The goal is to locate all solids from the tank so that they are completely gone.

Inspect the Tank

The technician will also perform an inspection of the tank to make sure that everything is in working order. It may be recommended to make some repairs to your septic tank while you have the tank open and easy to access. Consider signing up for a maintenance plan as well to keep your septic tank functioning well over the years
